According to the UN Refugee Agency, one in 122 people worldwide is now either a refugee, internally displaced, or seeking asylum. In New York, it’s not hard to imagine many of those with whom we contact about our daily grind have, or were, once part of this staggering figure.

The implications on architecture are acute. From Lousiana post-Katrina, to NYC post-Sandy, to the refugee crisis in Calais, to the influx of migrants across Europe and the USA, the question of how to create a livable, pleasurable built environment for the world’s population will be answered by architects.

We at FSC are proud to be part of the Hurricane Sandy “Build It Back” project. For our part, we have designed hundreds of homes to exactly match the original structure, doing our best job to replace the home environment of those displaced by the storm.

It is our highest aspiration to take a larger role in this global issue and help create solutions for the people who need them most.
